Welcome, Dar.Ra! Could you start by telling us about your early experiences with music?

Music was a constant in my house. My father was a jazz lover, my mother adored The Beatles and The Motown Sound, and my sister was all about Led Zeppelin. Despite not finding much musical encouragement at school, I was determined. I started my musical journey outside school boundaries and quickly found myself performing in a reggae band at 17. It was my first paid gig and a pivotal moment that steered me away from the army and deeper into the music scene.

How did you make the leap into the professional music world?

At 20, I landed my first record deal with EMI, a significant milestone for any aspiring musician. My entry into the professional realm was through a House Music act called Taste Of Paradise. Our first single was recorded in the legendary Manfred Mann’s studio. Having a hit track like ‘Reach Out’ early in my career was eye-opening, offering me a real look into the music industry’s workings.

Your music blends various genres. How would you describe your style to someone hearing it for the first time?

I like to think of my music as a fusion of sounds. I’ve created genres like ‘Rock Step,’ a mixture of Rock and EDM, and ‘Gothic Soul,’ which combines Goth with Soul R&B. It’s all about creating something new by merging different sounds, aiming to evoke peace, joy, and happiness in the listener.

Who have been your biggest musical influences, and why?

Icons like Beethoven, Prince, and Bowie have been huge influences. They were all about pushing boundaries and exploring new territories. Bowie’s perspective on feeling uncomfortable as a sign of being in the right place for creativity resonates with me deeply. It’s about making something interesting, even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone.

Can you share more about your current projects and what fans can look forward to?

I’m working on an EP called ‘Just Mad Enough To Be Cool,’ which includes a mix of Reggae, Latin House, and Salsa Rock. Additionally, I’m producing an audiobook for my book ‘The Night That Jimi Died,’ a story about intertwined souls. I’m also developing a theatre show, ‘A Transatlantic Love Story,’ exploring the musical dialogue between Britain, the USA, and the Caribbean.

What message do you want to convey through your music and your work?

The music industry has undergone massive changes since I started. Establishing Kusha Deep Music in 2003 taught me that it’s possible to survive and thrive as an independent artist. While not having a major label’s support poses challenges, it also frees you to make the music you truly believe in. The digital age has leveled the playing field somewhat, allowing artists to be as visible as they push themselves to be. It’s about building a connection with your audience, something I value deeply.

In conclusion, what would you like to say to aspiring musicians?

The journey through music, especially as an independent artist, is both challenging and rewarding. Embrace the challenges, because they come with opportunities for growth and creativity. Stay true to your sound and vision, and remember, the connection with your audience is paramount. The industry might change, but the power of music to connect and heal remains constant.
